Stamp out seasonal stress
‘Tis the season to be lazy, tra, la-la, la-la, la-la, la, la…
The holidays are coming and it's one manic round of shopping, writing cards, wrapping presents, more shopping, writing more cards to those people you forgot, parties, kids parties, visiting relatives, cooking, more shopping…you get the picture. Christmas can be a really stressful time and the chances are that you will not have much opportunity to stay in shape during these weeks leading up to the holidays. All the good habits you have worked on establishing may have been pushed to the back of your mind but getting active over the holidays is easier than you might think…
If the festivities leave you feeling exhausted, exercise may be the last thing you feel like doing. However, exercise supplies more oxygen to the brain, resulting in greater alertness, so it won’t make you more tired. Instead, it may leave you feeling more energetic and able to cope with the demands of Christmas. Perhaps more importantly, exercise releases adrenaline and endorphins, which increase responsiveness and provide a feeling of well-being. Effectively, exercise will help you to unwind, relieve stress and actually enjoy the celebrations you have put so much effort into organising.
Here are a few ideas for a happy and active Christmas:
- Forgotten to get something essential for a special meal, or need a last-minute gift? Why not take ten minutes to walk to the local shops to get some fresh air and exercise.
- Instead of settling down in front of the TV after your Christmas dinner, take an hour to get out for a walk, clear the head and get your metabolism moving.
- The days between Christmas and New Year are usually less frantic; if you have children, try to plan outdoor activities like a trip to a forest or park, a game of football, or a bike-ride so that you can benefit from the activity too.
- Arrange to meet a friend for a walk or a visit to the local leisure centre to take some time out for yourself.
- Take some time to work in the garden.
- Go ice-skating!
- If you have an opportunity to dance at Christmas parties – go for it!
Remember, every little counts. Exercising over the holidays will not only benefit your body, but also your mind. Just make sure Santa’s not the only one ‘laughing all the way’ this Christmas...
