Health benefits of Mediterranean diet restated

With winter now officially here as an unusually mild November takes a distinct turn for the cooler, thick broths and hearty dinners might be on many people's minds.

But it is important not to forget the tenets of a healthy diet, with new research reiterating the benefits afforded to people enjoying Mediterranean-style cuisine.

The study, by John Hopkins University in Baltimore and presented to the American Heart Association, highlights how this diet is high in unsaturated fats, from sources such as olives, nuts and avocados.

Dr Meghana Gadgil, lead researcher on the study, said: "The introduction of the right kind of fat into a healthy diet is another tool to reduce the risk of future heart disease."

Not only are these ingredients good for the heart, but the fact it also cuts out much of the processed carbohydrates present in western diets means that it can also diminish the risk of conditions such as obesity and diabetes.ADNFCR-858-ID-801214678-ADNFCR
