Healthy eating: Smoothies 'great way to consume more fruit'
Fiona Kirk, a nutritionist, has highlighted the importance of purity in coming up with a good smoothie and highlighted a few important lessons.
She pointed out the importance of restraint when it comes to including bananas, warning that in many commercial preparations a surprisingly large proportion of the drink is made up of this single ingredient.
"The more natural it is, the better, because you are going to get the nutrients," she explained.
For those who are buying ready-prepared smoothies, Ms Kirk advised buying the more expensive brands as these are typically less processed.
As they do not have a strong shelf life, she advises checking the reduced counters at the end of the day as this can often yield excellent savings.
A recent report published by Mintel found that 82 per cent are put off buying smoothies due to the perceived costs and would purchase more of them if they were available with a cheaper price tag.
