Why women would rather delay than display

A third of women in the UK (29.9%) say that having to wear a bikini is what they dread most about the summer holidays, according to a new survey by tescodiets.com

This compares with just over 11 per cent who say delays at the airport is their biggest summer fear and 17 per cent who say falling ill whilst abroad.

In addition, nearly half of those questioned (48.7%) said that slimming to look good in a bikini was the worst aspect of beauty preparation for summer holidays – compared with just 31% who put painful waxing at the top of the list.

Furthermore, in a poll of the most unflattering item of clothing ever invented, the bikini comes out in second place with 29.4% of the vote – just pipped to the post by leggings at 31.5%.

And for those women who manage to overcome their anxiety and don the dreaded bikini, the survey reveals that over half (54%) of them would rather get hot and bothered covering it up with a T-shirt than reveal all.

, Head of nutrition at tescodiets.com, says: "It's such a shame that low self-confidence and poor body image could get in the way of enjoying a holiday. But we can do something about this.

"Eating healthily and taking regular exercise can really help boost our morale and self-esteem so, even if we're not quite at our target weight, we know we're on the way and are doing everything we can to look and feel great."

And it’s not just restricted to the bikini. Overall, nearly half (43.2%) of the women questioned said that having to wear skimpy clothes was the worst thing about summer - nearly double the amount who gave sunburn and heat as their number one choice (22.9%), or 21.2% who said wasps were the worst thing about summer.
