Dancing 'can help in the fight against obesity'
Dancing is a good way for obese people to lose weight, it has been claimed.
According to Dawn DeMendonca, dance instructor and creator of dance website DanceMass, dancing can help people keep fit and release stress and is generally good for a person's wellbeing.
Specifically, Ms DeMendonca says a single dancing session can burn off 256 calories, increase heart rate and improve flexibility and coordination.
As such, she believes it is an important tool in the fight against obesity.
"The thing with obesity is that obviously dance is good for you and you are going to lose weight if you dance," she commented.
"There are a lot of people out there who are obese but are fantastic dancers. We don't want people to think that if you dance, you have to be slim. There are some great dancers out there who are bigger in size and can move really well."
More women than men are likely to take part in keep-fit, aerobics and dance-related exercise classes, a September 2008 survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics shows.
