FSA calls for more detailed nutritional information
Food companies will be encouraged but not required to introduce front-of-pack labelling on products to help Brits interpret nutritional information, it has been revealed.A new report from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) argues that consumers need more than just percentage Guideline Daily Amounts (GDAs) on packaging in order to manage diet plans.
Paul Lincoln, chief executive of the National Heart Forum, said that the clarity of food packaging plays an important role in the nation's eating habits and diets.
He explained: "It's a means by which to encourage the food producers and the retailers, with what leverage they have, to actually encourage product reformulation so that there is less unhealthy fat, salt and added sugar in foods."
In related news, a survey conducted by Toptable found that 93 per cent of diners think that restaurants and chefs should lead by example in promoting healthy and sustainable food choices.
