Infants eating habits formed early
Parents are encouraged not to feed their kids to a strict timetable as infants are very sensitive to changes in blood sugar levels.Women's health and child care expert Dr Miriam Stoppard, from the University of Portsmouth, said that grazing frequently on healthy foods throughout the day is preferable to set meal times.
She explained: "Babies make a huge metabolic transition when they emerge from the womb where they have been fed continuously through the placenta, to taking their mother's milk.
"Infants who are fed frequently or allowed to feed before they get hungry and even in their sleep will be more content than babies fed to a rigid timetable."
Ms Stoppard added that children who are allowed to eat wholesome food when they like are less likely to be overweight.
While babies like routine, parents should respond to their child's needs at an early age and remain confident when the time comes to making the transition from milk to solids.
