Just how do the Sex and the City girls do it?
So which one are you? Vivacious Samantha, homely and feisty Charlotte, jaw-droppingly smart Miranda, or quirky Carrie? At the height of Sex and the City popularity in the mid noughties, the 4 characters were seen as role models for modern women who were embracing a new surge in ‘girl-power’.
Their fabulous physiques and wholly varying attitudes to what constitutes exercise make them compulsive watching. They are gorgeous and fun while still working hard to maintain their A-list bodies. All of the girls look fantastically toned and slim which prompts me to contemplate whether their on-screen lifestyles and diet choices are actually compatible with their tip top shape.
The 4 characters live in a bustling city which requires them to push and shove their way through crowds, run for the subway and dance the night away on endless dates. And whether it is a conventional exercise option or not there’s no escaping the benefits of an active sex-life. It is no wonder that these stereotypical city girls rarely look anything less than svelte.
Carrie is definitely my favourite Sex and the City character due to our shared enthusiasm for shoes. Her feet may suffer, but there is little doubt that tottering around town in a pair of manolos is a work out in itself.
Charlotte is a good old fashioned jogger. A half hour jog around the park will help her burn around 300 calories, and she will also reap the benefit of a boosted metabolic rate afterwards. Charlotte has a balanced lifestyle and is definitely the home-maker of the foursome.
Samantha is liable to network and socialise all day and night, while saving the rest of her energy for who knows what. Samantha is also known for following raw food diet plans, eating plenty of fresh fruit or organic vegetables, and working out in the gym on a regular basis. At over 50 it is no wonder that she has the body of a 20 year old.
Miranda is a busy mum, who needs to juggle a high powered career as a lawyer with the duties of house-wife and friend. We did see Miranda struggle with her weight at times during the series, especially after having Brady. Miranda lost weight eventually due to the stresses and strains of being a single mother. We all secretly cheer when she finally squeezes into her skinny jeans.
With all of the characters now over 40 it will be interesting to see if they will suffer from the dreaded middle aged spread both off screen and on screen. I feel the girls will be simply fabulous for many films to come.
