Midwives recommend 'healthy eating' in pregnancy

Pregnant women should eat a healthy, balanced diet, just as they would at any other time in their life.

That is according to Sarah Montagu, admin secretary at the Association of Radical Midwives, whose comments follow government advice that there is no need to "eat for two" during pregnancy.

Ms Montagu said: "Anything that emphasises positive things about which foods are good to eat is a good thing ...it's the same as the general healthy eating advice."

She suggested that women should eat plentiful amounts of fruit and vegetables, protein and a small portion of dairy products.

Empty calories found in items such as cakes and biscuits should be avoided, and people should be careful to eat wholemeal bread and pasta, she advised.

She implied that there is currently not enough information available to pregnant women about what they should eat to stay healthy, despite the demand for guidance.

The National Institute for Clinical Health and Excellence recently issued recommendations suggesting that women should aim to achieve a healthy weight before they conceive.ADNFCR-858-ID-19914811-ADNFCR
