New campaign aims to increase bowel cancer awareness

The first ever national cancer campaign to raise awareness of the symptoms of bowel cancer has been launched in England today (January 30th).

Care services minister Paul Burstow said the 'Be Clear on Cancer' campaign will use simple messages to make people aware of the symptoms and give them the confidence to discuss any concerns with their GP.

He explained: "No one likes talking about their poo - it's embarrassing. But bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer so we need to get over the embarrassment and talk to someone about it.

"No matter how embarrassing it is, talking to your GP can help save your life."

Symptoms of bowel cancer include bloody stools, loose bowel movements lasting for more than three weeks, and a pain or lump in the abdomen.

People with the disease may also experience unusual tiredness and unexplained weight loss.

Consumers may be able to reduce their risk of developing bowel cancer by modifying their diet plans.

For instance, people should limit their intake of meats that have been processed with preservatives, such as ham, bacon and sausages, to just one meal per week.ADNFCR-858-ID-801278100-ADNFCR
