Nutritionist suggests budget cuts lead to unhealthy diets

People are more likely to eat unhealthy foods as they believe it is a cheaper option.

That is according to Dr Carina Norris, a registered nutritionist, journalist and author, who has suggested that consumers do not know how to eat healthily for less.

She said: "The problem is that not enough people know how to eat healthily on a tight budget and we're all being squeezed financially at the moment."

Dr Norris said that it is "perfectly possible" to eat a healthy diet cooked from scratch by using foods including fruit and vegetables and cheap cuts of meat.

When people are unconfident of their cooking skills, however, she warned that they are more likely to opt for convenience foods and takeaways.

Recent research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies revealed that families are reducing the amount they spend on food and drink as a result of financial pressures.ADNFCR-858-ID-800779077-ADNFCR
