Customised diets may offer protection against disease

Individual diet plans formulated in accordance with a person's genetic make-up may help reduce risk of disease, according to a new study from Kansas State University.

The report suggests that customised diets could be the future for food-related health care.

Lead researcher Koushik Adhikari said: "Scientists are looking at the molecular mechanisms in the body. At the molecular level, you can look at what specific nutrients can do to your body that would trigger genes to act properly, in a healthy way."

He added that with a better understanding of how nutrients alter gene expression, there is a potential that food could be used instead of medication to combat common health problems such as high cholesterol.

Awareness of the natural benefits of foods and nutrition on long-term wellbeing has increased significantly in recent years, with many Brits changing their diets to help manage a range of conditions.
