People may be able to boost their memory and brain function by drinking a glass of milk each day, new research suggests.

Scientists at the University of Maine studied more than 900 people, aged 23 to 98 years, who were given a series of brain tests.

The researchers recorded the amount of milk in participants' diet plans and found that those who drank a glass each day tended to perform better during mental performance tests, regardless of their age.

Milk drinkers were also five times less likely to fail memory and brain function tests than non-drinkers, according to a report in the International Dairy Journal.

The study authors claimed: "Easily implemented lifestyle changes that individuals can make present an opportunity to slow or prevent neuropsychological dysfunction."

Milk - along with other dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt - is also a good source of protein and calcium, both of which are important components of a healthy, balanced diet.

People who do not enjoy drinking milk can still enjoy its benefits by adding it to cereal or porridge.ADNFCR-858-ID-801279861-ADNFCR
