Simple steps like drinking quality water and moderate exercise can help improve your health, especially if coupled with giving up smoking.

That is according to the Laboratory Spa & Health Club, which has advised people looking to start 2012 with a bang to consider their diet and fitness levels.

Danny Saunders, head of fitness and personal training at the club, suggested people try going for a walk instead of smoking when they feel stressed or angry.

He added: "Swap tap water for bottled or filtered water as this will not only improve your bowel habits and general health, but it will also help to reduce your body fat too."

The fitness expert also advised improving your swimming technique, something that can lead to better posture and also soothe joint strains.

He was speaking after figures suggested that a quarter of people in the UK have a body mass index (BMI) of over 25, meaning that they are technically obese.

Despite this, most did not believe that their weight problem was severe enough for them to be in this classification.ADNFCR-858-ID-801254199-ADNFCR
