The top New Year's resolutions tend to be starting a new healthy diet, improving fitness and giving up smoking.

Kicking the habit can improve levels of fitness while a diet can help consumers get back into shape after overindulging over the festive season.

Anyone who wants to give up smoking has been advised to not put too much pressure on themselves as they need to be their own supporter in order to succeed; it was suggested by Rasheed Ogunlara, a life coach at rasura.com.

He said: "You have really got to want to do this for you and for the things that are really dear to you.

"You have got to have the right energy level to get that result - the drive has got to be strong enough for you to want to give that up."

It is important to keep in mind the benefits of kicking the habit, such as saving money and improving fitness levels, in order to keep going, Mr Ogunlara added.

A poll conducted by the Booze School found that the average adult spent £75 on alcohol over the festive season.ADNFCR-858-ID-801250173-ADNFCR
