Freelance health and fitness writer Gabrielle Nathan is a strong advocate of such an approach, noting that treks or adventure-inspired trips are ideal for kick-starting a journey to the new you.
And the dietary expert should know a thing or two about the subject, after being chosen as one of a select group of journalists to "Follow the Footsteps of Team GB".
The challenge saw Ms Nathan given a tailor-made tour of their training base in Cyprus, as the athletes prepared for the games. Exotic and activity-filled in equal measure, the experience proved a sweaty one in more ways than one!
Speaking about her experience and the appeal of such fitness-focused vacation experiences, she explained the two primary benefits of such an adventure.
Firstly, Ms Nathan noted that a trip abroad provides "focus" for those seeking to get on track with their diet and exercise.
As she explains, it gives individuals "the chance if you can to get away from the distractions of work and life and to really think about how to improve your physical fitness and your particular sport or skill set depending on what you're training for".
In addition to this, the fitness writer noted the luxurious and relaxing foreign locations offered the ideal space in which to take time out during sessions – something similarly important to any regime.
"After a long day of exercise make sure you rest and relax properly and eat properly," she noted.
But while a visit to some far-flung foreign land may not be available to everyone, Ms Nathan believes there is plenty people can do to ensure they maintain their fitness schedule and motivation.
One such example is to join a local running club, where regular scheduled meets and the opportunity to meet up with like-minded people could keep you on the path to your ideal weight loss.
