Consumers have been urged to be careful when drinking alcohol this Christmas and new year.

Police forces around the country have taken the opportunity to remind party-goers of the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption, for both their health and overall safety.

Superintendent Dave Boyle, who is heading this year's Christmas and new year safety campaign at Bedfordshire Police, said: "Many of us don't really indulge during the year as much as we do during the festive season and the consequences of drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can be severe."

As well as remembering the risks to health, Superintendent Boyle noted that people should consider the country's laws on drink-driving - both during nights out and the following day if they are still over the limit - and take extra precautions over their personal safety.

Police say that Christmas and new year revellers should still have fun, but should keep an eye on how much they are drinking and plan how to get home safely at the end of the night.ADNFCR-858-ID-801249481-ADNFCR
