Refrain from drinking too much alcohol this Christmas
That is the warning issued by diet expert Zoe Harcombe, who highlighted some of the dangers of over-indulgence at this time of year.
"Alcohol inhibits the operation of glucagon, a hormone that works to get our blood glucose levels back to normal," she explained.
"When this function is impaired, we find our blood glucose levels 'on the floor' ... This is why the kebab van only ever looks attractive when you're leaving the pub."
A healthier option is to consume a small amount of very dark chocolate (at least 70 per cent cocoa), she recommended.
"At drinks parties, have a drink in one hand and leave the other one free to greet people and be animated. Don’t have a plate in one hand and then you can’t eat all the rubbish vol-au-vents that you won’t even notice you've had!"
Ms Harcombe also recommends wearing fitted clothes at Christmas parties so you're not as likely to overeat.
